Der Bildhauer Carl Andre (amerikanisch, geb. 1935) ist ein bemerkenswertes Mitglied der minimalistischen Kunst. Andre studierte Kunst an der Phillips Academy in Massachusetts und besuchte das Kenyon College in Ohio, bevor er England und Frankreich besuchte. Er leistete seinen Militärdienst in North Carolina ab und zog dann nach New York, wo er als Bildhauer tätig war und als Redaktionsassistent in einem Verlagshaus arbeitete.
1964 fand Andres erste Ausstellung im Hudson River Valley in New York statt. Seine minimalistischen geometrischen Werke erzielten immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit und er stellte regelmäßig in Galerien in New York aus. Für seine schlichten Würfel und Platten verwendete er Holz, Blei, Kalk, Kupfer und weitere industrielle Materialien. Inspirieren ließ er sich für seine ersten Skulpturen von Künstlern wie Constantin Brancusi und Frank Stella.
Andre schuf viele große Skulpturen im öffentlichen Raum, er veröffentlichte einen Gedichtband und stellte seine Werke bei zahlreichen internationalen Institutionen aus, wie im Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum und im Museum of Modern Art in New York City, im Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin und in der National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Quelle: artnet
